"Towle is to local Western Sierra Nevada foothills geology, history, botany, and literary musings what Thoreau was to Walden Pond, Twain to the Mississippi, Muir to Yosemite, and Leopold to Sand County." From a blog by Tom McGuire (Gambolin Man 6/26/06)

Thank you for this great picture. I am one of the many folks who knew Russell through his blogs but never met him. Though not a big hiker myself, I felt drawn to walk out on "the Chinese road" as described in his last northforktrails blog and though I did not make it all the way out to Tadpole, it was a calming trek to be in Russell's world out there. Thank you for sharing so much of this man I wish I'd met.
